In fact, out of the 195 Yoga Sutras, only three deal with asana, five deal with breath, and the remaining 187 explore the mind, and its capabilities and limitations. Yet asana is the major understanding and effort in our society’s view of yoga.
Current yoga instruction places a great emphasis on asana, what are some of the reasons for this? How does asana fit into the framework of Patanjali’s eight-limbed path to yoga? What are some of the possible advantages and draw backs to placing such an emphasis on asana?
Hatha yoga represents step three and four in the eight-limbed path (the systematic approach to self-realization). Hatha yoga brings about unity of the mind, body, and spirit. Through this practice, the body is the tool, and it is strengthened and healed so that a transformation in consciousness can occur. Through Hatha yoga, we begin the practice of moving into stillness in both body and mind. As we move into, hold, and move out of postures as a form of dynamic meditation, our awareness increases and we become a witness, or rather, observer to our experience in a loving, non-judgmental way. In doing so, we strengthen our capacity to be fully present in our bodies, and in our lives. As we hold the intention to simply be present, our hearts open fuller, and we become aware of the vast spaciousness of our heart. We begin to understand that our heart has the capacity to embrace with compassion and love the full range of our life’s experience-the joy, pain, bliss, sadness, confusion, and clarity. As we learn to keep coming back to our breath as a way back into our bodies and as an anchor to the present moment, we feel our minds moving into stillness. This does not mean that we stop all thoughts or feelings, but rather, we acknowledge their presence in the field of our awareness. We hold an intention and mindfulness to not react to every thought, but rather see thoughts and feelings arising and dissolving as waves or clouds drifting by. We learn to not buy into our thoughts, and we begin to divest them of their emotional charge. We can see that our thoughts are separate from who we really are-that we are not our thoughts. Our minds reflect our true self when it is undisturbed by fluctuations. As we drop deeper into stillness, we begin to move through layers of our being-from the most dense (our physical body) to the bliss body (our subtle body). It is as if we are peeling an onion as we move through these various layers. The mind stops identifying itself with all of the mental constructs that have defined us for so long. We are not our bodies, we are not our thoughts, we are not our ego, personality, roles we play, and identities we have taken on. When we dig deeper inside, we feel the mind, body, and spirit in balance and we experience unity consciousness-our harmony with the one-ness that we are. Our true nature reveals itself, and we realize that we are luminous, radiant, eternal, blissful, energy beings. We feel how the divine energy within us connects us to all other beings and with all that is in the universe. All separation between the self and others fades away and we experience the conscious union that is yoga. Could we in this day of age, and in our society find this conscious union beginning with the first limb in the eight-limbed path. How many people in our society would really care to delve so deep into the Yamas-or moral precepts, how
we treat each other, and the world around us, find relative mastery there, and then continue that, while moving into the Niyamas-or qualities to nourish in the self, how we treat ourselves, and grow within our “self”. Find relative mastery in those first two limbs, which could take lifetimes to achieve relative mastery in before the third limb of Asana could or should be entered? I feel that the beauty of Hatha yoga is its ability to merge us into the first two limbs as a by-product of the way we feel, and the way our mind slowly learns with the transformation that our body undergoes through our asana practice. Yes, it is ideal to begin with the Yamas, and Niyamas-but so many of us would be lost if we did not have a vehicle for stilling the body, and quieting the mind-through our asana practice, before we could delve deeper into the moral precepts and qualities to further nourish in our “self”. Whatever the intention of starting a yoga practice is-the journey and process of yoga always works. Placing a great emphasis on asana is fine, placing a great emphasis on the philosophy of yoga is true. However, there is always a point where the two merge effortlessly, and who are any of us to judge the reason and intent for the effort on that path? If people are practicing yoga, it is their union with their, body, mind, and spirit-however they see that, is their choice and path. I hope to be but one facilitator and guide in that path for whomever so chooses.
